It’s a beautiful fall Saturday and I’m headed off to a client’s house armed with two bags of clothes from Bloomingdale’s and Saks. But before I take off I wanted to talk about a topic you’ve been asking me about: How to style booties as a petite. (Don’t forget to check out the super exciting styling opportunity I have for you at the bottom of this post!)
Let’s get into it, shall we?
1. Tall Boots
Tall boots are super flattering for petites as they elongate our legs – and they are very much on trend right now. Whether it’s tucked into sleek jeans, leggings, or paired with a trendy white dress, they are a stylist’s dream to work with.
2. Mid-Calf Boot
Styling mid-calf boots can be super tricky because they will shorten your leg length – no bueno! This is especially true if you are wearing contrasting colors (e.g. black boots on nude tights). Try the same or similar colors, such as nude boots with nude tights or black boots with black pants to maintain the illusion of longer legs for that lengthening effect. And make sure the boot is slim fitting to your leg for an elongating slimming look.
3. Ankle Booties
Now, let’s talk ankle booties – still a very hot trend for the fall and winter 2024.
Straight Leg Jeans: The timeless straight leg jean continues to dominate the fashion landscape. If you’re going to pair this cut with booties, make sure that the jeans cover the boot shaft like the example below. No skin or socks showing please.
Wide Leg Jeans: Wide-leg jeans are incredibly popular right now, so if you’re going to snag a pair, look for a longer length that touches the top of the foot or goes 1-1.5 inches past the foot for the easiest style for work with as a petite.. If you do try a cropped style, raise your waistline to elongate your silhouette and make up the shortening effect of the cropped length. Then match the shoe color to rest of outfit.
Kick-flare Jeans: This cut, like the wide-leg jean, is also more flattering with a higher waistline. Make sure these pants cover the shaft of the booties, concealing any skin.
Skinny Jeans: In general, you’ll want to create one long leg-line by matching your tights or pants with your boots. Keep it sleek and slim to the ankle. If you still love your skinny jeans, style your booties by showing off a sliver of skin (1-1.5 inches). They are the most flattering paired with combat or duck boot styles. Match the color of the booties with your jeans for a sleek look, and keep it fitted at the ankle or it will look sloppy. Two little rolls at the hem make the pants versatile – they’ll pair well with other shoes. Pro tip: you can modernize your outfit with a chic trench coat or a stylish dress. With tall boots, skinny jeans are the way to go into 2024.
Sounds like a lot of rules? If you get lost, remember, pair your jeans and boots so that you elongate your legs by keeping a continuous line from the waist to the foot. Or pair your jeans and boots to avoid cutting off the leg. Now you’re ready to confidently rock jeans and boots like a pro and look chic for the fall and winter!
