This classic trench is one of my most used, year-round jackets. I purchased this petite, London Fog brand last year in February from Macy’s online at the end of the winter season. (They had a ton of options online.) I wanted one that was water resistant, had a lining, and a detachable hood.
I specifically looked for one with slender sleeves. I also ended up altering it slightly by taking off the wrist cuffs because I thought they looked too “Inspector Gadgety.” I also didn’t button the pockets to give it a more simple, streamlined appearance.
I style my trench several different ways depending on the weather. My two favorite ways to wear it are to roll up the sleeves and leave it open in warmer weather or to button it up, belt it, and add a scarf on top in colder weather.
For more specific details on what to look for in a fashion trench and to avoid looking like Sherlock Holmes, see my post on The Classic Trench. Scroll down for specific details on buying a trench according to your body shape.
Hourglass: Look for a fit and flare shape. It should be fitted in the top/bust area into the waist, then flare out at the bottom.
Apple: Find a single breasted style that cinches at the waist and is at least hip length or longer. The car coat style (pear) is also a good option. If you like a little flare on the bottom, go for it! An a-line silhouette looks good on all shapes.
Inverted Triangle: Look for clean simple shoulder lines with no padding or details (like epaulettes), which will make your shoulders look broader. Look for a flare on the bottom.
Pear: The single breasted trench like the apple above or a simple car coat style is very flattering. Wearing it open can create a nice long vertical line. If you like a little flare on the bottom, go for it! An a-line silhouette looks great on all figures!
Column: You can wear any style. Your shape can pull off the traditional double breasted style a lot easier than the others.

So I was wondering the difference in choice between the JCrew column trench you picked and it’s cheaper counter part. https://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/outerwear/trenchesandanoraks/PRDOVR~E8023/E8023.jsp Is it the cut difference?
Shannon says
From reading the descriptions, the JCrew trench I picked is lined and the fabric is different. JCrew is typically great quality so I would have no qualms about purchasing either! I actually would lean towards a machine washable like the one you linked above for a mom with kids. That was one requirement for most of my clothes. The one you linked sounds like a great choice. It’s lighter so a great stylish everyday coat! It sounds like you can layer a sweater underneath if it’s cold!

It did mention the cut was more “drapey” but i am wondering if could sacrifice the slim fit for the slimmer price! 🙂
Shannon says
From the pictures and the description, it sounds like it isn’t too “drapey” but you would have try it on to see for sure. 🙂
