TRAVEL CAPSULE – Last weekend I was in Indiana for a conference. I had to ask my fellow fashionistas Melissa and Jo-Lynne what to wear since the weather forecast was for 90 degrees and thundershowers. I live in California where we don’t experience that type of weather. They assured me I could wear all my summer clothes and sandals, but to pack an umbrella. As it turned out, it only rained once during my trip, on the bus ride from the airport to the hotel, and boy, was it a downpour! After that, it was clear skies the rest of my visit. The amazing thing about this capsule is there are more than 20 outfits you can create from these core pieces!
See FULL TRAVEL CAPSULE.
What’s great about this travel capsule is the multiple outfit options. You can easily mix and match the tops and bottoms to get completely different looks. I could do another whole post just on the outfits from this capsule. Â Let me know in the comments if you would be interested to see that.
Below is what I wore on the plane ride to Indiana. I love my new H&M “New York” graphic tee, but they don’t sell it online yet. It’s almost a tunic length and covers my bum. I wore the same outfit on the way home, except I swapped black leggings for white jeans. I snapped the selfie for Melissa. It was a joke because her jewelry company Chloe and Isabel sells a similar Y necklace that caught my eye, but the model was wearing a bikini. I wanted to make sure the necklace looked OK sans swim wear. 😉

My leggings are from Costco, and I often wear them as pj bottoms. (I linked similar ones above that look comfy.) Since my friend Katie was picking me up at 3:40 am, I figured I could get away with wearing them on the airplane with a blazer. I also really like my black flats. They will transition well to fall. (See how I styled them for spring with white jeans here.)
Below are my two outfits for the conference on Thursday and Friday.
FIRST TRAVELÂ CAPSULE OUTFIT
This was my favorite outfit. The casual striped dress is from H&M and I wear a half slip under it since the fabric is a little thin. I know I’ll wear it a lot this summer. It also comes in black, grey, red and (in stores only) pink. I had a hard time choosing between black and stripes. Stripes won out. My denim vest is from Target last year. It has gold threading with silver buttons, so it pulls together both silver and gold jewelry perfectly!

SECOND TRAVEL CAPSULE OUTFIT
I love this H&M feather print drawstring skirt. I got a few compliments on it during the conference. I’m glad the midi length is trending – it’s a great alternative for those of us who don’t wear mini skirts! H&M has European sizing (that runs smaller than US sizes) so I ended up getting two sizes up than my usual H&M fit for this one. For some reason the waist band was really tight on the size 4 and 6 so I ended up with an 8. I might have to take in the sides a tiny bit for a perfect fit, but at least I won’t be getting a stomachache wearing it.
I’m pretty particular with my prints. Since I have a plethora of neutral tops, the feather print skirt fits perfectly into my summer wardrobe.

The Mickey sandals are my favorites from last year. They are so comfortable. I can do all my daily activities in them…they almost feel like flats. I can wear them with jeans, shorts, dresses and skirts. I was thrilled they have wide sizes available, which are hard to find.  They fit me perfectly and make my feet look small.
Quite a few people ask me about my Elliott Lucca  metallic tote I found at GoodWill last year. It’s a fun color for summer and I use it everyday. If I were to buy another one, I would get something basic and similar to the Ralph Lauren bag I linked to in this post.

COMMENT OF THE WEEK:
“Love this whole ensemble. The dress and clutch are gorgeous. And I agree about the brand. Max Studio is my go to brand. I love how they fit and I can safely order that brand online because it is so consistent. Max and INC from Macy’s are my brands for dresses! And I love to wear dresses!” SUZANNE
Thank you for your comment on the Bohemian Style dress, Suzanne. IÂ love hearing what styles and stores readers shop at.

Love this travel capsule, Shannon! I especially like the dress. I just ordered a black and white striped dress a few days ago. 🙂

Thanks Melissa! I LOVE the black and white dress. I had a hard time deciding between the black one that the striped one but I thought the striped dress looked so fresh and light for summer. I already have a black midi dress…xx-S

Wow… I am SO impressed. I love how these pieces can be mixed and matched. I am terrible at creating a “capsule wardrobe” concept… but I am always amazed at those who can.
LOVINGGGGG the denim vest to go over the striped dress. Too cute!!

Packing guides like this are so helpful! I love seeing how you created a mini capsule where everything works together. I tend to reach for a lot of black and white when I travel, too. Well, all the time really, but even more when I travel!

Black and white are standard colors for me. They’re classic colors that never fail. Black is great for traveling because it hides dirt so well. 😉 xx-S

Your travel capsule looks like it makes packing a lot simpler. I wonder, though, if you ever have trouble flying in longer skirts or maxi dresses? It seems like every time I wear something loose-fitting (even a looser blouse or unbuttoned cardigan) I get pulled out of the security line for a quick pat-down. Even though I love the comfort of a maxi skirt or dress, I’m not sure it’s worth the hassle in the airport. Does anyone have any thoughts?
Shannon says
I wore my leggings on the plane. I think pants are definitely easier to travel in if you are flying and toting around luggage. What about leggings and a longer flowy tunic? xx-S

I love when ppl do a capsule wardrobe. It is something that I wish I could do, I have tried but for whatever reason nothing I have goes with anything else. Shoes are the only thing I can use with a number of things. lol I love that feather skirt.
Shannon says
It takes a lot of thought and and time to put the first one together, but once you nail down your style it saves so much time. 🙂 xx-S
