Have you ever walked into a social situation and felt self-conscience or inferior because of your outfit? You didn’t bring the right clothes for the occasion maybe you were underdressed or over dressed.
womp. womp.
We all have those wardrobe mishaps– for example, my client Tessa, who just turned 60.
She worked with me after feeling horribly dressed at a weekend retreat in Napa (a beautiful wine county in Northern California).
Everyone on the retreat had a modern and fresh look, but she felt frumpy. It’s hard to enjoy a weekend away in a beautiful place when you feel like the worst dressed person in the room.
THE SOLUTION: A Style Plan. NO more not having the perfect outfit for each occasion. A style plan will make putting the pieces together easy and simple. Not to mention the compliments.
The other day I got a text from Tessa with an outfit selfie of two items I had helped her shop. She need outfits for dressy casual and cocktail parties, etc.
“Wore this to the ladies tea today. Thought you might like to see it after being hemmed 3” It was a big hit.”
That is what creating a plan did for Tessa and I know it will do the same for you!
Today I want to teach you three things you need to do when refreshing your closet that will help you be 10x more successful at having exactly what you need for each occasion.
3 Things You Absolutely Must Do When Refreshing Your Style for the New Year.
1.Make a list of all the activities you need to dress for on a weekly basis for a two week period. Include everything you do from lounging to dressing up to working out.
For example:
work from home, 6
at the office, 2
watch kids, 6
dinner/social, 4
church, 2
gym, 4
Write down everything from exercising to lounging round Saturday morning.
2. Next categorize your activities by outfits. Group activities where you can wear the same types of outfits together in one category.
For example, if you like to wear the same clothes working from home and caring for kids that might be a “day time wear” category.
If you like to wear the same thing out to dinner as you do to church or worship that might be “dressy casual”.
So write down all the categories where you can group outfits together.
Next to each category write how many times in two weeks you need outfits for that category. So for each category you know roughly how many outfits you need.
For example:
daytime wear, 6
dressy casual, 6
professional, 2
gym, 4
Now you have categories of outfits and how any outfits in each category you need for a two week period. This is key. Knowing your lifestyle needs will direct your shopping list.
3. Look in your closet and see how many outfits you can put together for each category. Then list out the categories by priority of need.
Start with the category that has the highest number of outfits. So for example I need 6 day time outfits for working from home and running around with my kids. Say I have four outfits I really love. I can note that I need to add some pieces for day time wear so that I can have a total of 6 outfits.
Let’s say I only have 2 dressy casual outfits I like, but I had 6 down in that category as well. I need 4 outfits to fill in this category so this tells me I need to prioritize the dressy casual area of my closet over my day time wear.
Summary:
Step 1. Make a list of all the activities you do in a 2 week period.
Step 2. Categorize the activities by outfits and write down a list of outfit categories: ie dressy casual, day time, exercise, church
Step 3. List categories by shopping priority. Generally I encourage you to prioritize category which has the biggest GAP or think about what area stresses you out the most and start with that one.
