I love my classic trench!!! It was one of the best investments I made last year-or for my closet. Period. It’s SO SO SO versatile. You can dress it up for a shower, party, wedding, date, etc. Or dress it down with leggings or distressed jeans for the “Oh, I just threw myself together this morning, but still look surprisingly presentable” vibe. You can wear this baby with anything and everything….and I mean EVERYTHING!!! Toss it over: jeans, dresses, skirts, suits, leggings, workout clothes, pajamas, or even nothing at all.
There are so many styles to choose from. Not everyone looks good in the classic double-breasted style. If you have a smaller frame, consider a single-breasted. Big lapels tend to broaden so choose accordingly.
Look for neat, simple, clean, unfussy lines. Lots of details like buckles, etc., lean towards the detective, or worse hail Hitler look. Also avoid big shoulders and hems no longer than an inch or two below the knees. Make sure it’s a fitted silhouette; you don’t want to look overwhelmed by the coat. Mid-thigh lengths are great for pants, and longer trenches accommodate pants and dresses/skirts.
Last year my goal was to find the perfect classic trench. It had been on the back burner for about 10 years. (yeah…..i know). But since our climate is so mild, it was just about the best investment I’ve made in awhile.
Mine doubles as a raincoat-even better! I looked for a higher quality garment (not Burberry -maybe one day….) and ended up with a London Fog classic. It came with lining and a hood. On cold days I layered a cashmere sweater underneath and topped with a scarf. Perfect!
I’ve realized you don’t really need that many coats. One longer (knee length or above) coat or trench, one blazer, and one jacket is the most you need for each season. I had two long coats for winter and only wore my houndstooth coat up to 3 times max. The trench took the cake by far.
I wear my trench year round! This year the open drapy look will be trending. See khaki waterfall trench. Suede is also a fabric you will see.

Where did you find your trench coat? You said it took you awhile. I really want one for a trip we are taking. I looked on Amazon, but it’s hard to know what you are getting. Plus, I am thinking this may not be a good look for me in general. I do want some kind of spring coat like this though.

Hi Rebecca, I got my trench coat at Macy’s online. They had a lot of options. Mine is the London Fog brand. I ordered a couple and shopped around for a couple of months. Look for my post next week on how to find the right trench for your body shape for details of what to look for. xx-S

Well, I took the plunge and ordered a coat off of Amazon a couple days ago. We’ll see. I don’t like to buy online because stuff doesn’t fit-like the 4 pairs of pants I over-carefully studied before buying on the Limited and had to return them all. 🙁 I’ll let you know!

That is super common with online shopping. Sometimes I order 4 pairs of shoes from DSW and return ALL of them. I typically only buy online at a place I can easily return to the store or that has free return shipping. 😉 Don’t feel bad, stores are catering to people who can’t try on in the store and it’s ok to order 2 or 3 different sizes of the same item. I do it all the time. 😉

I’m glad you like the style! I hope the size up fits better for you. 🙂
