Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work with a personal stylist? Take a peek into a petite closet edit session with Kyla.
Kyla is a beautiful, petite, young mom of three. We worked together at Stitch Fix for a couple of years. She recently asked me to give her petite closet a pair of fresh eyes. Everyone needs a stylist – even stylists! We spent a fabulous Saturday morning together playing in her closet.
How do you feel about your current closet?
Kyla felt like she was in a rut purchasing the same things over and over. She was also hoping to get fresh ideas on what she should buy moving forward. She is a busy mom and entrepreneur so she doesn’t have a lot of time to shop! Sound familiar? Join in on our adventure together in her petite closet.
3-Step Closet Discovery Process
STEP 1
First, we do a basic color analysis and body shape determination. This tells us the best colors, fabrics, and styles to wear as a foundation for creating the ultimate wardrobe.
We determined that Kyla has a cool temperature and she is a True Muted. Muted colors are hues with grey added to them.
STEP 2
Using the info we gathered from the color analysis, I gave her tips on what prints to wear and how to pair colors to her advantage. Kyla has a medium to low contrast between her hair (with highlights) and skin so she looks beautiful in low to medium contrast levels. She can wear colors that are of similar intensity together well.
This info helped her to confidently let go of pieces that had high contrast prints (ie black and white) or colors that didn’t make her skin glow.
STEP 3
Utilizing her best colors and body shape, we assessed her closet by the color and fit of each item. We determined what worked well and edited out unflattering pieces to inventory what she has and what she needs.
Clothes that showed off themselves instead of showing off Kyla were set aside to find another happy home.
After we assessed each piece, we collected her best pieces and I created a shopping list of items she needed to round out her closet for a more versatile and complete wardrobe.
For example, Kyla has several pairs of blue skinny jeans + 1 pair of grey denim. I recommended adding a pair of colored pants and a pair of printed pants to create a greater diversity of looks. I also suggested she branch out and try new cuts ie, boyfriend or wide-leg pants.
In Summary
The Closet Discovery Session is the first step in transformation. It begins with a color analysis to help you learn your colors. Your best colors smooth out your skin and diminish wrinkles & fine lines. They also show off you instead of showing off themselves.
Next, we determine your body shape and proportions to learn the best cuts and styles for your unique design. Color and body shape knowledge allow us to efficiently edit your closet and leave you with pieces you absolutely love and an easy plan for creating your perfect closet!
