Up until recently, my MO for buying clothes was to randomly grab cute tops, cardigans, scarfs, etc. that I would spot while running errands for other purchases (diapers, scotch tape, milk). Target preys on moms like us. They put all their fashionable women’s clothing and accessories right within eyesight of walking in. You can spot a poncho you want to try on as you’re cramming kids into the red plastic cart.
Walmart does the same. Costco at least has the decency to showcase their apparel in the middle of the store after the display case of mongo diamonds and watches you can’t afford. Since I’m not getting a ring upgrade, I can certainly afford a new sweater….
With each addition of a new family member, I’ve realized the more organized and prepared you are, even in little things like remembering to restock your your diaper bag with snacks or setting the breakfast table the night before, the rhythm of life tends to run smoother and more efficiently when you’re prepared. A little planning can go a long way in heading off a potential tantrum because mini-me has a busy toy or snack to “take the edge off.”
This same principle applies to our clothes. There is no getting around it; we have to wear clothes every day. We don’t live in a society where wearing the exact same shirt and pants every day is the norm, so there is a little thought that needs to go into what you put on. But you don’t need to spend a lot of time to get decent and pulled together!
My wardrobe has typically been a hodgepodge of the same t-shirt in 3 different colors and random tops and bottoms. This is the result of “buying on the run.” I would also tend to purchase a blouse that happened to look great with the pants I was wearing when I tried it on, but didn’t match much else in my closet. Hence, I ended up with a bunch of individual outfits and a clash of styles.
I have found that the capsule wardrobe approach has helped me stop those bad impulse buys. When you have what you need and look good in what you have, those urges to grab the cute top or browse through the adorable dresses seriously diminish. In fact, last night at Target I had the self control to say “No” to the adorable striped shirt I SOOOO wanted to buy. Woo-hoo for me!!
It’s so freeing when you can grab any top and any bottom and know without thinking they look good together and they look good on you!! Voila – capsule wardrobe! I hope these outfits I post inspire you to know that you don’t have to take a lot of effort each morning to be content and confident in what you wear.
