How To Build A Workout Capsule Wardrobe
Rookie Mistake #1: Wrong Size Selection
Choosing the wrong size can significantly impact comfort and performance. You don’t want to risk being uncomfortable during exercise. So make sure you’re buying the correct size and fit for your activity. Example: You go into the dressing room try on two pieces and the smaller size makes you look thinner, but you should really go up in size because when you exercise because it will probably be too tight. Not like I’ve ever done that before… 😉
Fitness Guru: Buys workout wear that fits well. Compression wear can offer support and enhance your performance. But some workouts need a bit of stretch and give so she chooses accordingly.
Rookie Mistake #2: Overlooking Fabric Quality
Ignoring the fabric quality and choosing a cute design or cheap price on Amazon can be a huge mistake. After 5 washes things start stretching out and looking sad.
Fitness Guru: Buys higher-quality outfits with fabrics that are breathable – especially for intense workouts. Otherwise you can overheat and feel uncomfortable during exercise. She also chooses moisture-wicking materials to keep her dry during workouts examples include CoolMax, Under Armour’s HeatGear and Dry-FIT (by Nike).
Rookie Mistake #3: Neglecting Supportive Sports Bras
Many of us are guilty of this. There are so many super cute sports bras out there, but they’re not all created equal. They need to support the girls beyond looking cute. A supportive sports bra is crucial for minimizing movement during high-impact activities, providing comfort and reducing the risk of discomfort or injury.
Fitness Guru: Buys the right sports bra that fits well and yet isn’t too tight to restrict movement. She goes up a size or two if she needs to because size numbers mean nothing. Fit is everything.
Rookie Mistake #4: Prioritizing Style Over Function & Ignoring Activity-specific Needs
Athlesiure is super hot right now, so shopping smart is striking a balance between fashion and performance. What looks like cute workout wear might not be great to exercise in and different workouts have different outfit requirements. Ignoring the specific needs of the activity, like flexibility for yoga or support for lifting may cause discomfort and hinder performance.
Fitness Guru: Creates a list of her workout activities, makes a plan for what items she needs and buys clothes for those workouts. Bonus if the clothes are super fun!
Rookie Mistake #5: Choosing Inadequate Footwear
The wrong footwear can affect overall performance and lead to injuries. It’s important to invest in good quality athletic shoes designed for your specific type of exercise. So for example, when I want to run, I go to a running store to buy shoes. My husband got weight lifting shoes because he likes to lift.
Fitness Guru: Shoes can be super hard to fit so she goes to a place she trusts, getting her gait analyzed and making sure she invests in a good pair of shoes that supports not only the activity, but her foot. She doesn’t wear these shoes for years on end, but replaces them when they’re worn out to make sure she gets the best support possible.
Rookie Mistake #6: Forgetting Layering Options
Depending on the weather and type of exercise, layering options may be necessary. You might have some great outfits, but have nothing to wear on cold or rainy days to stay warm or dry. A lightweight jacket or moisture-wicking base layers can be essential for colder weather.
Fitness Guru: Has a few layering pieces to match the climate she lives in and her exercise routine.
Rookie Mistake #7: Not Testing Range of Motion
Don’t shop for workout wear while you’re out getting cleaning supplies at Target. Make a plan and write down what you need. Then make some time to try things on and move around in the dressing room. You’ll cut down on returns and regrets later.
Fitness Guru: Knows what she needs before she hits the stores to shop. She tries on workout wear while testing full range of motion as needed for the workouts she prefers.
Rookie Mistake #8: Ignoring Personal Style Preferences
While functionality is key, ignoring personal style preferences can lead to wasted money if clothes sit in your drawer. If you don’t LOVE how it looks or feels on you, don’t buy it. It’s going to create negative energy when you to to work out and you need all the happy vibes you can get when it comes to exercise. Finding a balance between style and functionality ensures both comfort and confidence during workouts.
Fitness Guru: Builds a workout capsule with mix and match colors and patterns that she loves to keep her collection interesting. This also allows her to create various looks with fewer pieces.

Shannon’s Tips To Build Your Ideal Workout Capsule Wardrobe
1. List the ways you love to work out or want to start working out.
2. Write down how many times a week ideally you’d like to work out (generally 3 times). We should be getting in 150 minutes a week. This will tell you how many outfits you need.
3. Write down how you want to feel and how you want to look when working out.
4. Write down what colors inspire you, what prints inspire you, what are some styles in store that are new and fun that you want to try out. Is it a fun tank or tee with fun details, ruched, knotted, etc.? Is it fun printed leggings or leggings with fun details like mesh or crisscross designs? Go back to color psychology and lean into the different colors and energy level they vibrate at. I do this every morning when I get dressed. I pick my colors based on how I want or need to feel for the day.
Style is a tool that can help you accomplish your goals so make sure that you’re investing in things that support and align with your life and the direction your moving in. Even if it’s walking with a friend, I want you to put together cute outfits for walking – leggings, a fun tee shirt, your vest and cute beanie.
