Capsule Wardrobe Series
Pear shapes are the most common figure. They consist of a delicate, petite upper half, and a feminine, curvaceous, lower half. Creating balance is easily done by combining light-colored tops with dark bottoms. I used the Rule of Three to compile this mini-wardrobe. Notice the three bottoms, dark flares, mid-color boyfriend jeans, and colored pants in contrast to the light-colored or patterned tops. See below for outfits from this capsule.
Tops:
The best necklines for this figure are boat-neck, wide V-neck, scoop necks, and off the shoulders. Embellishments, such as pockets, ruffles, and flutter sleeves are a plus. Experiment with bright colors and patterns (especially stripes) in portion to your size.
Look for semi-fitted or nipped waists in jackets or blazers that end at the hip or have a slight flare. Tie waist jackets with wide lapels look good. (See grey wrap coat above.) Go for fluid, flowy blouses instead of boxy, structured cuts. Notice the fluid pastel top, white-collar tunic-shirt, ivory sweater (bottom), and black tunic-dress.
Bottoms: When getting dressed, start with the broadest part first. Grab dark bottoms (avoid loud prints), in flared, boot-cut, boyfriend, or trouser-cut pants that fall straight down from the widest part of your hip.
Avoid whiskers and fading at the thighs. Look for small stitching details, horizontal front pockets, and back pockets that are closer together.
Try A-line skirts, or lightly gathered skirts that don’t add a lot of volume. Veer away from super skinny pants (unless you have tunic style top). Be cautious of high waists and pleated skirts that emphasize curves.

Comment of the Week comes from Jenni regarding the Merlot Ponte Pants & Fur Vest post.
I found your blog … and I’m loving it! I can’t remember the last time i actually took time and money to work on my wordrobe. Probably somewhere after I left my professional job for full-time mommy hood.
I am so encouraged by your words above. I have fallen into a uniform, jeans and sweatshirt with my favorite ball cap. It’s my go to outfit. Your ideas seem so simple I feel confident enough to actually try to work on it. I’ve heard of the capsule wardrobe idea and loved it but the source lacked direction on how to actually do it. Thanks for all the work you are putting into this blog for mommies like me!
You just made my day, Jenni! That’s just what I’m here for – to help give you busy mom’s the confidence boost you need to step out of those stretch pants and into your own style!
