Pop Quiz! What is an often overlooked fashion item that can complete your outfit to perfection or change them up in an instant? If you answered “accessories,” you get an A+!
In this style training, I’m going to show you 5 current accessory categories you can add to your closet to refresh your look and update your closets without having to worry about fit or size!
1. Update your accessories in current colors or fabrics like reds, metallics or woven fabrics.
When you swap out fabrics, you immediately change the vibe and the feel of your wardrobe. You want to project that you are intelligent and informed . . .you know what’s hip, right? Swap in pops of red or metallics, rosettes, mesh, fringe or denim accessories this season. But make sure it matches your style! Are you boho? Try out fringes or woven fabrics. Do you like edge? Incorporate more metallics into your outfits!
2. Update your flats.
The hot trends we are seeing this season are ballet style, mesh fabric for shoes and flip flops.
When you wear old, outdated, worn out sandals or shoes, you instantly date yourself, and look older and out of style. Refreshing your footwear for spring and summer is a game changer because it’s an easy way to completely update your whole outfit and look up to date.
3. Update your shoe styles and heels.
Other shoe trends that have been widely popular this year are the micro/kitten heel, slingback or pointy toe styles.
Personally, I love that pointy toe styles are back. And as a professional stylist, kitten heels are the perfect thing for networking events or client meetings. Adding these styles will instantly elevate your look and polish your outfits making you look chic and sophisticated. Some of these styles can even be mixed into dressy denim for a polished casual look.
4. Update your bag.
This year, styles I’ve seen on the runways and in stores include: the round shoulder bag, envelope clutch bags and the puffer/quilted bag.
Adding a new bag to the rotation is one of the easiest ways to level up your look because you don’t have to worry about getting a perfect fit! When you add a current bag to your outfit, you can wear basic staples and look modern, chic and sophisticated without much effort. But again, make sure the style of the bag fits in with your vision for your style. For example, if you’re trying to have a more casual vibe with your wardrobe, try something in the puffer style that fits a more relaxed lifestyle, but is still trendy!
5. Update your jewelry.
Statement earrings, stacks of rings and beautiful statement brooches are just some of the amazing pieces I’ve seen fashionistas wearing.
When you pick the right jewelry you perfectly accent and polish your look. Your accessories should complement and support your outfit – not compete with them. So, if you wear a lot of solids and simple items, then getting a fun statement brooch that is colorful or a fun design with a print is a good add. If you wear a lot of prints and colors and textures, then some simple rings or earrings would do better. Make sure that the styles match and you have a theme to your outfit.
Now, before you run out and buy a bunch of new trend items, remember to go back to your style words and your wardrobe plan.
What happens if you don’t? You will buy items that end up contributing to an over stuffed closet full of miss -matched pieces down to the shoes and bags. And you still won’t be able to put outfits together.
