DATE NIGHT ROMPER – I’ve been on the lookout for a black romper since last year and finally found one at Target several weeks ago. Rompers tend to run short and I prefer a 6-inch inseam. However, I compromised on this romper because I was able to alter and lengthen it. As a one piece, it feels longer than wearing short shorts. Being a petite size, it’s easier to fudge a shorter hem because I have less leg length in general. I hope next year designers will make longer styles available for us who prefer to cover more of our legs.
Rompers can be extremely hard to fit because most people are not the same size on the top and bottom. They also tend to have elastic waistbands that don’t work for many people. Read my Stylist Tips below for finding your best romper.

STYLIST NOTES: ROMPERS
- Rompers are a fun, effortless piece that can be dressed up or down. Pair them with your favorite sandals or flats & bangle bracelets for running errands. Polish with your favorite statement necklace, heels, and a swipe of your favorite lipstick for a night out. Solid colors are more versatile, but prints make great day wear.
- Find a romper with a silhouette that fits/skims your widest part.
- If you’re curvy, pick solid colors over large prints and patterns.
- As a pear shape, I have a curvy bottom, which can cause the back to ride up. I altered the romper by letting out the elastic in the back so that it fits looser and stays down.
- Look for fabric with stretch if you have a big bust or a curvy lower half.
- If you are busty or have broad shoulders, go for a stretchy material in a v-neck style to accommodate your upper half. Also, try a bodice that crosses over the front like this and this.
- Be cautious of the elastic waistband if you are an apple shape or middle figure. Prints and details on the top or bottom can distract attention away from your midsection. Adding heels and a chunky belt can also help disguise a thicker waist.
- If you have a large bust, be wary of the elastic waistband causing the top to blouse out too much. This can cause your upper half to look larger than it is. Look for a top half that accommodates your chest and is fitted under the bust. (See links in #6.)
- For petites and those who have narrow shoulders, a halter top, skinny straps, v-neck, off the shoulder or anything with sleeves is flattering.
- Adjustable straps are helpful if you have a long torso or short torso.
COMMENT OF THE WEEK:
“I love tip 8!… ‘A true woman of style can find something in ANY store, Kmart or Neiman Marcus’… So, so, so true. Another thing I am learning is to take care of my items. I starting buying nice pumps (tip 5) and I keep them in the boxes instead of just throwing them in with the rest of my shoe drawer. Love your chic look!” Kristin
Thank you for your comment on the Jackie O Style: Simple Chic, Kristin. I think we all love the effortless, simple look.

I love your ideas and the clothes you style! The Target romper is sold out, so I’ll look at Loft to find another one. Thanks!

Hi Diane – Loft had quite a few to choose from. If not this year, maybe next summer! xx-S

I only bought my first black romper this year too. Mine is also from Summer and has long bell sleeves plus it is not too short. I agree with your tips, so thorough and full of great style advise. Your romper is beautiful and classic. I like that it is a wrap style as that is always flattering. The pops of red and teal were the icing on the cake!

Shannon, I have not been a fan of rompers all summer but I could never figure out why. But I think it was the shorter lengths that I don’t like. Your romper is gorgeous. I love the longer length. It is so much more sophisticated and classy, for sure! Great styling, too.
Thanks so much for linking up with me On the Edge of the Week. I hope to see you again this week. Have a fabulous day!
