Although it’s in high 80’s in the bay area, that’s not stopping me from adding some fall pieces to my closet! Today I wanted to share a couple of trends I’ve been seeing in the biz as a stylist.
These are a couple of key pieces you definitely want to add to your closet this season.
STRAIGHT OR FLARE DENIM
So you might have picked up on the cropped straight leg, kick flare trend that is popular among fashion girls! Over the last couple of years, I’ve added Madewell High Rise Cali Demi Boot Jeans in various colors (black) and with button fly details. A pair of Paige Hoxton High Rise Straight Leg Jeans, (avaiable on Amazon starting at $64) and a pair of 7 For All Mankind Dojo Tailorless Wide Leg (Flare) Jeans ON SALE 30% off using code FF30).
I’m REALLY loving this new dark wash kick flare version Madewell sold out in regular but still available in petite and tall inseams!

Not sure how to style a cropped straight leg or kick flare? See my links at the bottom of the page for stylist tips. One extra trick is to find a bootie with a higher shaft, as in leftmost picture above (on the model/legs wearing the Paige jeans.) When the weather dips down you’ll want to cover those ankles.
ADD PLAID
Next, a checkered plaid, like the piece below, is a huge trend this season. I don’t work in an office anymore; I style my clients from home on the computer. But, when I run out to take my kids to school, errands or out to dinner, I love to grab a blazer to throw over jeans and tee. It’s a chic alternative to a light jacket or cardigan that give you that extra “looking good without trying” vibe. Not only that but people are a lot more polite to you when you’re wearing a blazer.
This looser boyfriend style is the look du jour I see popular among fashionistas in Paris. GAP has this trendy Modern Plaid Blazer. On sale for from $128 to $90.
Or try this one from Top Shop via Nordstrom. On sale for 50% for $54!
The larger boyfriend style looks great with these new looser pant legs, especially a good straight leg. (The Page Hoxton is a slim straight leg, a great silhouette for easing into the new look if you’re having a hard time parting from your favorite skinnys.)
GET YOUR STYLE PROWESS ON WITH ANIMAL PRINT
Say no more. One of the leading trends hitting the market hard this season is a menagerie of tiger, snake, zebra, and of course, leopard designs. You might not be like me who can’t wait for the weather too cool down enough to justify stepping out in faux fur, but you can sneak in a hit of these hot (when was it ever out?) prints with a sleek pair leopard loafers or a well-placed cheetah belt. Then there’s always the classic animal print clutch to go with your LBD.
I was ogling this Boden Boxglove Faux Fur Coat (above) in my recent catalog and scourged the internet for a more budget-friendly version and bought this $41 (on sale down from $147) coat from Shein in the mail.
No longer available, here are some great alternatives:

Great post! I am thinking of adding leopard shoes to my wardrobe. I hate to part with my skinnies but do like the straight leg. Are you able to style yours with ankle booties?
Shannon says
Hi! I typically wear my straight legs with a heel or a flat. They look a little funny with ankle booties and need something with a high shaft. I’m on the look out for those too, but since fall merchandise hasn’t totally hit the stores yet, I’m still waiting. It’s also been hot here so I’ve been wearing them with flat sandals or heeled sandals.

Great to hear from you, Lori! I’m happy to help. 🙂

Love this post on jeans! I have added my bootcut jeans back into my wardrobe but I find them difficult to wear with flats or loafers
Shannon says
Ditto, my flares are a little too long to wear with flats. I do have to pair them with at least a one-inch heel when I wear them as well. I’ve heard it said it’s helpful to have two pairs. One tailored for flats and one for wearing with heels. 😉
