The SHIRTDRESS is a timeless classic. I’m sure you already have one in your closet! I got this lovely little number in my Stitch Fix box last week and had so much fun styling it. It’s called the “Hellen Cotton Shirt Dress” by 41 Hawthorn if you’re interested in requesting it.
I started with the accessories in my closet. (This season, I’m slowly replacing items one by one so most of what I’m wearing is from last year.) You’ll recognize most of the accessories below from last summer.
STYLIST PRO TIP: THE SHIRTDRESS.
A quick word on shirtdress styles – this A-line, belted waist design looks great on my pear shape. It also generally flatters hourglass figures and inverted triangles (broad shoulders with slim hips). For ladies with a rounder middle figure/apple, try a shift style. Above are four simple ways I styled this classic dress. What I learned from this exercise: Shannon has too many of the same color shoes! I love how versatile cognac and tan are, but wow, this is BORING! Where’s the color, the pattern, the texture?! This summer I want to push myself outside my comfort zone and get some colorful shoes!
Next I styled it virtually with fun, new, and trendy pieces. Sometimes all we need are a couple pairs of new shoes and a purse or two to refresh our look for the season. I think this post illustrates that concept well. If you’re a capsule minimalist, then 3 shoes, 2 – 3 purses, and 2 – 3 other accessories will do the trick! I’ll admit: I’m a little obsessed with the current shoes and accessories at Madewell. Some of their pieces are a little young for me, but I think their footwear collection is trend-right for women of many ages!

Shannon…how do you feel about wearing a shirtdress (maybe denim?) as a jacket or duster? How would you do it, what would be best to wear it over? I have one, but I haven’t ever been bold enough to try it that way! Wondered what you think of it, since you didn’t choose to style this one in that fashion.
That’s a great idea! How long is your shirtdress? I think it’s easiest to wear it as a second layer over a fitted top and long pants with heels. But you can also try it over a fitted top + an a-line skirt or over a tee shirt dress. xx-S
